Theater Etiquette 101: Supporting Our Young Performers
Dance recital season is one of the most magical times of year—a celebration of dedication, hard work, and the joy of performing! Whether you’re a seasoned dance parent or attending your very first show, it’s important to understand the basic rules of theater etiquette. These guidelines help ensure that every performer on stage feels supported and every audience member enjoys the show.
Here’s what you can do to help create a respectful and encouraging recital experience for all:
Show Your Support—For Every Dancer
Our dancers have spent weeks (if not months!) preparing for this moment. Your enthusiastic applause is a powerful way to celebrate their courage and effort—regardless of their age or experience level. We encourage you to cheer for every class, not just the one your dancer is in. Positive energy is contagious, and your support means the world to these young performers.
Remain Seated During Performances
Once the lights dim and a performance begins, please remain seated. Standing up or moving around can block the view of those behind you and be distracting to the dancers on stage. If you must leave your seat, we kindly ask that you do so between routines, during applause breaks only.
Keep It Quiet
Even the smallest whisper can carry through a quiet theater. Out of respect for the dancers and your fellow audience members, please refrain from talking during performances. Let’s give our dancers the undivided attention they deserve.
Photography & Video
We know it’s tempting to capture the moment, but for the safety of our dancers and the enjoyment of all guests, no photography or video is allowed during performances. Flash or phone screens can be distracting—and dangerous—on stage. Many studios offer professional photos or videos after the show, so you can sit back, relax, and simply enjoy the magic live.
Stay for the Entire Show
One of the biggest ways you can show respect is by staying for the entire production. Leaving early can be disruptive and disheartening to the performers still waiting to go on. Every dancer deserves a full and appreciative audience—right up to the final bow.
Let’s Make It a Celebration!
Dance recitals are about more than just performing—they’re about community, encouragement, and creating memories. Here are a few ways to make the day extra special:
- Take Photos After the Show: Snap pictures with your dancer in costume once the curtain closes! These moments are worth capturing—and they make for great memories.
- Share the Joy on Social Media: If your studio allows it, feel free to post your photos and tag the studio or use the event hashtag. Just be sure to only share photos taken after the performance (not during).
- Celebrate Every Dancer: Whether it’s a high-five, a bouquet of flowers, or just kind words, recognizing your dancer and their peers helps boost confidence and joy.
- Talk About the Experience: On the car ride home or at dinner afterward, talk with your dancer about how they felt on stage. Celebrate their bravery, their favorite moments, and all their hard work.
- Be Present and Positive: Your presence and positive energy—before, during, and after the show—are the best gifts you can give your dancer.
